Well, we knew that Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Nick Foles wasn’t a burner. The third-round rookie, put in as starter for the rest of the 2012 season as the franchise re-assesses its options from top to bottom, put together quite a performance in Philly’s 23-21 win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Per ESPN’s Stats & Info, Foles became the third rookie in NFL history to throw for more than 350 yards, throw for at least two touchdowns, and give up no interceptions.
The other two rookies were Billy Joe Tolliver and Andrew Luck, so you just never know where Foles might go from here. No matter what, 32 completions in 51 attempts for 381 yards, two touchdowns, and no picks is a pretty neat stat line.
Wherever Foles does go, you can be pretty sure he’ll be running pretty slowly. Check out this 10-yard touchdown run with 1:40 left in the first half:
We’re surprised the run didn’t end with no time left on the clock.
Of course, we shouldn’t make too much fun — Foles ran a 5.14-second 40-yard dash at the scouting combine, and the Eagles didn’t take him for his jets. They selected him because they felt they could turn him into the type of quarterback who could make decisions and execute key plays, and he certainly did that in this victory.
When time was expiring in the game, Foles pulled off the game’s most important play with a 1-yard touchdown pass to receiver Jeremy Maclin. Foles’ two scoring passes came in the game’s last four minutes, and he requested that the winning play be run.
“They’re gutty. That’s what they are,” Eagles head coach Andy Reid said. “Some of the starters made big plays, and then the backups jumped on the bandwagon and joined them. I’m proud of the whole bunch.”
Reid is probably gone after this season, which has been a disastrous one for the Eagles franchise. But in Nick Foles, there seems to be more than a small hope that the team’s most important position is in good hands.
And slow feet.
